In order to confront global environmental problems, it is necessary to tackle environmental issues on a local basis with international cooperation.
A local area may be large or small, but in any case, the local area is the practical unit for solving environmental problems.
In order for us to carry out sustainable development in our communities, we must build a continuous cycle of learning, first by learning what activities are needed, then by learning the results of the first actions as teaching materials, and then by taking the next actions based on those results.

 

ESD and Sustainable Development
We have known for decades that we cannot achieve sustainable development with our current social system.
The solution was simple.

The solution was simple: change the society and, as a prerequisite, change the people who make up the society.
The reason why something so simple could not be done was also simple.
It is because we did not know how to solve the problem.
Now, we have a powerful method.
That is ESD.
Through education, we can transform our society and ourselves to build a society that can achieve sustainable development.

 

ESD and Critical Thinking
Education is proactive learning.
Learning transforms the learner and the society to which the learner belongs.
Learning is based on thinking.
When thinking is done critically, it can transform the thinker.
Therefore, learning for transformation is necessary to build a society that will achieve sustainable development, and this learning is achieved through critical thinking.
Thus, ESD must be a learning method that is supported by critical thinking.

地球規模の環境問題に立ち向かうためには、国際的な協力体制の下に、地域毎の環境課題に取り組んでいく必要があります。

地域の規模は大きい場合も小さい場合もありますが、いずれにしても、環境問題を解決する実際的な単位は地域です。

私たちが、地域において持続可能な開発を行うためには、まず、どのような活動が必要であるかを学習することからはじめて、次に、最初の行動の成果を教材として学習し、それを元に次の行動を行うといった継続的な学習のサイクルを構築しなければなりません。

 

ESDと持続可能な開発

私たちは数十年も以前から、現在の社会システムでは持続可能な開発を実現できないことがわかっていました。

解決策は簡単でした。

それは社会を変えることであり、その前提として、社会を構成する自分自身を変えることです。

簡単なことがなぜできなかったのか、それも簡単です。

解決のための方法が分からなかったからです。

今、私たちは強力な方法を手にすることができました。

それがESDです。

私たちは教育によって社会と自分自身を変革し、持続可能な開発を実現できる社会を構築することができます。

 

ESDとクリティカル・シンキング

教育とは主体的な学習です。

学習は学習者自身を変革し、学習者の所属する社会を変革します。

学習は思考を元にして行われます。

思考はクリティカルに行われるとき、思考する者を変革することができます。

したがって、持続可能な開発を実現する社会を構築するためには変革のための学習が必要であり、その学習はクリティカルな思考によって実現します。

このように、ESDはクリティカルな思考に支えられた学習方式にならざるを得ません。

 

ESDの学習領域

第一の分類は以下の通りです。

ESDの文脈において、教育を考える。

ESDの文脈において、持続可能性を考える。

ESDの文脈において、開発を考える。

 

第二の分類は以下の通りです。

まずESDの文脈において、持続可能な開発を考える。

次に持続可能な開発のための教育のあり方を考える。

 

第三の分類は以下の通りです。

ESDの文脈において、ESD自体を考える。

その意味は次ように解釈できます。

 

最初に考えてはいけない。

まず、感じることだ。

その後で、考えなさい。

感じるということは、即断即決を意味しない。

それは、考える方向を正しく導くものだ。

もし何も感じないなら、感じることを学ぶことから始めるといい。
